Designing With Ledgerstone

Written by Janine & Michael | Wednesday, August 23, 2023

Have you considered designing with ledgerstone? It's sometimes referred to as ledgers, ledgestone, or even stone veneer.

Ledgestone is infinitely versatile. Whether you are looking to add a little warmth or maybe a hint of character to your space, it's a great option to incorporate it! Since the majority of ledger stone panels have a natural and incredibly charming feel, it really can make a true statement in so many spaces!

What is Ledger Stone?

Ledgestone consists of stacked pieces of natural stone (often limestone) usually sold in 6x24 panels. These pieces of stone combined with other ingredients mean that ledgers are lighter and easier to form into different sizes and even in some cases corner pieces. They also cost less.

You'll find styles with differing stacked stone thicknesses, textures, and color variations.

There are so many benefits that can make this a great option for the interior or even the exterior of your home. Since ledger stone is lightweight, it can be used on walls, offering you many options for designing with them. One watch out, however: be sure not to install ledgestone over drywall or painted surfaces as it will not adhere properly.

Then, there's the versatility of ledgers when it comes to color options.

You'll find many collections at Floor Décor each with 16 different colors and some of those options even come in 2 different finishes! You can go with an elegant honed option to install as a fireplace surround or go with the rustic split face option for a more outdoorsy kind of feel.

How Might You Design with Ledgestone in Your Home?

Ledger stone adds visual interest and texture to a vertical surface. Five specific areas come to mind for designing with this material.

1. Create a Stunning Accent Wall with Ledgers

The most dramatic area for ledgers is an accent wall. Think focal point of a space in your home that's important to you.

The example below features a dining room wall. Notice not just the texture but the range of thicknesses of the stacked stone pieces.

An accent wall with a ledger stone accent will definitely make the space pop as well as pull the colors of the room together.

Whether you opt for more character with the split face style or the elegant look of the honed option, you will be sure to have a conversation piece to talk about! This can be great for bedrooms, entryways, sitting rooms, or even basements! These neutral earth tones will surely make a difference in your space!

2. Consider a Ledgerstone Backsplash

A stacked stone backsplash adds real flair to any kitchen. Thinking about adding a section of backsplash behind your stove? Interior stone veneer may be just the way to go.

Use a variety of vivid shades to add contrast to your current kitchen color palette and create a gorgeous stacked stone backsplash.

Keep in mind the honed option may be a better fit for maintenance and cleaning as compared to the split stone style.

By the way, sometimes a backsplash is an accent wall.

For that matter, don't forget to consider ledgers for your outside patio or cooking area. It's a natural!

3. Bathroom

You can make it warm and inviting or cool and rustic; the possibilities are endless! With such dramatic movement and colors in our ledger stone collections, no matter what you choose, it will create an immediate focal point with some pretty incredible movement to it!

4. Add Drama to a Fireplace with Ledgers

You'll find many examples of ledgers used around fireplaces, including in this article.

Notice the different feel the color and style of the ledger create in each space, not to mention how well each works with different patterns and surfaces.

4. Make a Vertical Statement with a Ledger Column

Some entryways, kitchens, or basements have columns that offer you a prime opportunity to add a little pop to the space without taking anything away from it.

Although the example below includes a fireplace, it also features a columned size that would otherwise look drab.

Again, you have so many opportunities depending on the colors you are working with.

How Do You Clean and Maintain Ledgerstone?

Once we’ve installed your gorgeous new ledger stone, you will be happy to know it is easy to care for since it’s used on vertical surfaces. Nobody will ever walk or eat on it so it will get far less wear than your horizontal surfaces.

Vacuum Dust

The split-faced option can hold about as much dust as an average windowsill so just be mindful of that when selecting a texture. A handheld vacuum or duster that traps dust instead of spreading it around would be best to use for daily cleaning.

Avoid Bleach or Acidic Cleaning Products

When cleaning ledger stone more thoroughly, you just want to make sure you avoid cleaning products with bleach or acid because these will damage your stone.

A neutral stone cleaner with a pH of seven or eight is what we suggest. We offer Miracle Sealants Tile & Stone Cleaner which does the trick every time! Just spray and wipe with a cloth or towel and give it about two hours to dry. You don’t have to do this weekly -- just as needed especially if it’s near the fireplace or kitchen.

To protect your ledge stone, you can also seal it for added protection from staining.

It’s safe to say that no matter where or how you use ledger stone, you can be confident that they will stand the test of time. The warmth and character of natural stone never goes out of style.
